Winter travel tends to be bulky. Sweaters, long sleeves, jackets, scarfs, long pants. All the winter clothing makes you feel you need to travel with a big suitcase. This winter break, I’m challenging myself to travel with just one small backpack, a 30 liter Osprey Porter. I researched exptendively, tried on a few, and ultimately settled on this front-opening hybrid duffel-backpack. The prime reason for going for a small sac is bec Kiwi.com (Do not use this site!!!) booked economy light flights, which only allow 43x25x21cm (essentially a laptop bag). Osprey 30 doesn’t comply with this, but I’m going to see if I can get by and sneak in without getting too much attention at the gate.
I previously used 45 liter pacsafe backpack and I think the mistake was in packing too much and ended up hating myself to carry the pack, moving from one place to another. It was also summer and the Roman and Napolitan heat made me feeling gross with sweaty shoulder strap. I am giving another shot to backpack travel. This time, it’s 30 liter only. I am space challenged but felt like a puzzle I needed to solve. “Do I really need this? Can I use this item for double purposes? Which one is lighter and warmer? Can I get by without it? Can I just get it while I travel?” These questions ultimately decided what to pull out and what to leave in. Here is what went in:
Toiletries, make up, elecronics (camera, battery, kindle, chargers, converter), 4 sets of underwear & socks, 1 bikini (for hot springs), gloves and a beanie, 3 leggings, 4 long sleeve shirts, one skirt, two sweaters, fast dry & cotton towels, foldable compact duffel, glasses, one pair of sneakers, security lock and cords, shoulder belt, sac rain cover, umbrella, sewing set, medicine, gifts, pens, small snacks and tea bags.
The content even includes a pair of sneakers and gifts! And just in case I decide to pay extra, I’ve packed an extra foldable duffel bag. I think my proudest decision was opting to use leggins instead of pants. To go with leggins, I have uniqulo thin heat tech (a functional fundamental for winter travel) and two long sweaters to cover the butt. All these were within 10kg weight limit. Packing cubes with compression also helped save so much space.
This is my first time going without a laptop and I’ll be typing and working on phone for 2 weeks! And of course this will lighten up the backpack as well. One good thing I liked about this pack is that the laptop compartment is super thin and minimal. Therefore the pack has more space for the main compartment. Let’s see how my chosen pac will sit on my back and shoulders after 2 weeks. I hope I don’t injure my back like last time. Stay tuned for a thorough review of the pack!
